The Growing Peace Movement

Fortunately, in recent weeks a peace movement has been growing throughout the world, including the U.S. Various demonstrations of 100,000 or so have pleaded for peace; in Italy around 500,000 people gathered for an awesome protest. This expanding movement is even gaining some coverage in the mainstream media. As the Iraq War heats up, more columnists finally are raising critical questions about America. It is important to affirm this trend. One can see glimmers of light.

We need to get beyond "United We Stand," or united we will fall. The major split that grows in the U.S. between the pro-war forces and the peace movement should be covered more by the media. Most Europeans still feel that most Americans are eager for the Iraq War, to protect our oil "rights" and our privileges.

Because the media has done an inadequate job of reporting on the peace movement, a false picture exists internationally that most Americans continue to support the administration's bellicose activities. We are seen as a spoiled, privileged, and greedy people willing to kill innocent people out of our fear, revenge, and desire to horde the planet's resources.
