Network television is the worst, with the exception of CBS's "60 Minutes." TV news has degenerated since its more free coverage of the Vietnam War contributed to the education of the public and the ending of that war without an American victory. TV lost much freedom during the Gulf War I, when the Pentagon reined it in. I seldom watch TV news and rely more on the internet to provide a wider range of news and analysis.

Most "talk radio" is biased, as are some alleged "news" programs, which are mainly opinion, such as Fox TV. Some independent public radio stations still exist, as well as the Pacifica network. Amy Goodman's essential "Democracy Now" http://www.democracynow.org is carried by 120 stations. Current and past programs can also be heard on their web-site.

America's isolation and alienation from our natural European allies and the rest of the world grows. Any moral authority that we might have had is disappearing in a world increasingly angry at our abuse of power. The only similar dark crisis during my nearly 60 years was the Vietnam War.

Fortunately, we made it through that tragic time, thanks in part to a free press willing to challenge Pentagon propaganda.
