Today, Dr. Basson lives in a rich suburb of Pretoria. As a cardiologist, he also has the benefits of being employed by the Pretoria Academic Hospital. The majority of its patients, being Black, are hardly likely to find this reassuring. It demonstrates that he is still currently being employed by the South African State. In addition to this is the fact that Basson has remained a member of the South African army! This, to say the least, surprising situation is strongly denounced by Members of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission who are strongly advocating the establishment of an international court, to finally bring to justice Basson and his associates, for their crimes against humanity. The lawsuit which was instigated against him at the beginning of 1999 did not raise the veil on all his criminal activities. The very conservative and controversial Judge Willie Hartzenberg, (brother of the president of the South African Conservative Party and an appointee of the Apartheid government), appeared prejudiced in his favour, at every court appearance reducing the charges. During the procedure of inquiry there occurred the disappearence of the doctor’s three CD-ROMS, a hastily made compilation of all the results of the various groups of experiments, which he had prepared, prior to his arrest.
