At the Iqbalpur camp in Godhra, where many Muslims are still living, residents say they have given up hope that their attackers will ever be brought to justice. They live and sleep on the floor in what looks like a cattle shed.

Bilkees was pregnant with her second child when she was raped along with her mother, two sisters and sister-in-law. All four, as well as her three-year-old daughter, were stabbed to death. Bilkees survived by pretending to be already dead.

"The people who did this were four men from my village," she told the Sunday Herald. "I don't think that they will get any punishment because the police don't give us any response to our complaints.
"We are never going back. When I went to the police station, the people I was accusing started telling me that if I left the village, I would be saved but that if I stayed in the village and carried on with my complaint, I would be killed."

have been officially registered by the police who are insisting that there be only one for each village in the district, irrespective of the number of victims. "We have no confidence that anyone will ever act on these complaints," he added.
