What will the international community do on this day, when the world is supposedly standing in solidarity with the Palestinian people, demanding their rights and their freedom?
Indeed, there will be speeches and rallies. The Palestinian flag will be flown and declarations made by political leaders. Nationalist songs will be sung by Marcel Khalife and poetry read by Mahmoud Darwish while we wrap kuffiyas around our heads.
But for how long must we wait until this day of international solidarity turns into the day of celebrating Palestine’s independence? Isn’t fifty-four years of struggle and oppression, strength and courage in the face of occupation and dispossession, a long enough time to wait for the realization of the most basic human rights and freedoms?
In solidarity and struggle from Palestine,
