Shirley and Dayish took a modest lead early in the evening by more than 3,000 votes as the Navajo Board of Election Supervisors and election office workers announced the results at the Window Rock Sports Center.

The margin widened later in the evening by about 4,260 votes after election volunteer Ben Silversmith announced the Newcomb and Shiprock chapter votes.

The margin continued to grow as Shirley and Dayish brought in hefty votes from the Shiprock Chapter with 1,078 and Shirley's hometown of Chinle brought in 1,039 votes.

When Shirley was proclaimed unofficially the new president, a loud roar of cheers came from the numerous Navajos at the Sports Center.

"I feel very happy because the people have confidence in the Shirley-Dayish team," Shirley said. "Now it's time to move forward. It took a lot of teamwork to get us here."

Shirley said a goal of the Shirley-Dayish administration is to work with everyone with a teamwork type of spirit.
