GETTING IN THE WAY OF THE BULLDOZERS Sunday October 20,2002

[Jayous, Qalqilya] Palestinians of Jayous Village have been protesting Israel's illegal confiscation and destruction of their farmland and olive groves to make room for the massive Apartheid Wall that Israel is building.

Today, Palestinian villagers, accompanied by international civilians again took to protesting the bulldozer destruction activities. ISM members defied orders to move out of the way to make room for the bulldozers that were on their way to uproot the olive trees and level the farmland. One ISM international activist, Tom Winston from the Settle area, was arrested for refusing to comply and for standing in the way of the private security officials. He was released a few hours later.

Palestinians and international civilians stood their ground even when the Israeli Occupation Forces threw 12-15 tear gas and three percussion grenades directly at the group. The IOF began shooting into the air and even aimed their guns into the crowd causing the people to panic. Two Palestinian males have been arrested for refusing orders to clear the site so that the bulldozers can complete the destruction of the land. Ehab Khaled (21 years old), and Fadi
Khaled (17 years old) were the two men arrested for trying to protect their farmlands.

Bulldozers have now begun the destruction of the olive groves, Palestinians and internationals are still surrounding many other untouched olive trees to keep them from being uprooted by the Israeli Forces.
