The murder of Intissar Ismail cries out for justice. The last time I worked with Intissar in Akka-hospital was in the early morning of the 15th of September. When the Israeli warplanes swooped low over the camps and I stepped outside to watch she pulled me back into the hospital, because she cared for my protection. Six days later I came back in burnt-out Akka-hospital. I was told, that Intissar was in the hospital when the Phalangists attacked. Dr. Sami and some of his colleagues stepped outside with a white flag to negotiate. The militiamen threw a grenade at them, killing three (Dr. Sami among them) and wounding the fourth. Intissar saw this. She threw a stone at the militiamen and screamed abuse at them. She ran out to the doctors to see if she could help them. One of the militiamen caught her and beat her unconscious. Five militiamen tore off her uniform, dragged her across the street and raped and murdered her. They mutilated her beyond recognition. Only by the rings on her fingers could she later be identified.

Signed, Dr. Ben Alofs
