A parliamentary source told the Lusa News Agency that Mário Soares was fed up with foot-dragging within the delegation and the recent resignation of Shimon Peres, a friend and fellow socialist, as Israel's Minister of Foreign Affairs, the source said.
Soares, the E.P. source added, felt frustrated at repeated delays of planned initiatives within the delegation, including the postponement of a planned visit to Israel and the Palestinian authority, due to reservations expressed by Sharon's government.
With Peres' resignation from the Israeli cabinet last month, Soares decided to step down as he felt he no longer had room to influence events towards peace, the source revealed to Lusa.
