After about two hours some of the rain-soaked made their cold way home whilst the remaining few tried to negotiate handing in a statement of opposition to the base. As the last ten stood at the vigil, the road was quickly closed off, the protesters surrounded and the General’s cavalcade sped past us, on to the road and into the mist. We only hoped he managed to read our banners at such speed!

After he’d left, the Commanding Officer agreed to accept a statement and two Yorkshire CND members were driven to the main entrance of the base to hand it in. The C.O. said that he wasn’t allowed an official position regarding missile defence but he saw the general’s visit as being "all part of the debate". We were promised that the statement would be read and were assured that these statements are passed up the hierarchy.

Missile Defence is fast approaching us in the U.K. Yorkshire CND, Fylingdales Action Network and other organisations are working hard to raise awareness and to oppose the system in every way that we can. Hopefully our presence at the base showed General Kadish that, despite his country’s economic and military dominance and their obvious power over Mr Blair, we will not be a push-over and we will do all we can to avoid any U.K. involvement in Star Wars.
