Navajo voters decided it was time for change and elected a new Navajo Nation president Tuesday.
In an unusual move not seen by previous candidates, President Kelsey Begaye
and Vice President Taylor McKenzie speak at the Shirley-Dayish celebration
at Nakai Hall Tuesday night to congratulate and announce support for President-elect Joe Shirley Jr. and Vice President-elect Frank Dayish Jr.
Chinle native Joe Shirley Jr., 54, and his running mate Frank Dayish Jr., 43, of Shiprock racked up 31,754 votes, according to unofficial results of the 2002 Navajo Nation General Election.
Navajo Nation President Kelsey A. Begaye, 51, and his running mate, Vice President Taylor McKenzie, M.D., brought in 24,166 votes unofficially (McKenzie refused to give his age to the Navajo Times).
