“Sad to say, we are not on track. If we don’t do better in the next 12 years than in the last 10, we shall miss most of those Goals. Every country needs to make greater efforts. And that will only happen if you, the people of each country, insist that what needs to be done, is done.

“It is your United Nations. Please make the most of it.”

Although there are those who fear the U.N. and see it as a “World Governent”, attempting to override national sovereignty, nothing could be farther from the truth.
The U.N. was conceived after the failure of the League of Nations, as a voluntary organisation of Member-States, due to a lack of committment by its members.

While there is the remote possibility of the Five Permanent Members of the Security Council – China, France, Great Britain, Russia and the United States – all banding together to block U.N. actions, through their Veto Power, there is no legal basis for them banding together to force action.

The U.N. Charter is a safeguard.
At present, it would appear that the United States is attempting to force its will upon the U.N. but such an attempt is doomed to failure, since whatever any one nation may do, the other Member-States of the U.N. will manage to show that the Charter of the United Nations demands the protection of national sovereignty.
