Pierre-Henri Moutarde, 37, a bookkeeper in central Paris, expressed an opinion typical of many of the angry Frenchmen who marched to protest the election results: “I did not agree with many of Segolene Royal’s policies, but she was so, how you say, smokin’ hot.”

Professor Davis Logsdon, who has studied the ascent of hot world leaders at the University of Minnesota, said that the defeat of Ms. Royal could be “a blessing in disguise” for the European Union, who might have found the presence of such a torrid president “distracting.”

“The EU leaders might not have gotten anything done with Segolene Royal sitting at the table,” Professor Logsdon said. “Remember, these guys are used to dealing with [German Chancellor] Angela Merkel.”

Elsewhere, a Los Angeles County Superior Court judge sentenced Paris Hilton to 45 days without publicity.
