Divine Strake: Here We Go, Again!

The coalition that came together in the Spring of 2006, to fight the Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) plans to detonate a “bomb” has again joined hands for Divine Strake, Part II.

In typical fashion the agency in collusion with the Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration Nevada Site Office (NNSA/NSO) made the announcement that they had completed a “revised” Environmental Assessment (EA) right in the middle of the holiday season and are ready to “drop the bomb”. And, today we find out, that in their rush to get this document out at a time when we would be focusing on other things they neglected to include 10 pages of data. Oooops!

In the last days of his administration, Governor Kenny Guinn formally requested a full scale Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) stating that the EA was not sufficient. Ignoring the Governor they seem to be going full steam ahead in trying to complete this test. We ask what is the rush? Senator Pete Domenici of New Mexico said they couldn’t possibly do it at White Sands, NM, because of the necessity to do a full EIS, which could take several years. If that is good enough for New Mexico then it is good enough for Nevada and our neighbors, at risk of again facing the risk of dangerous fallout.

In DTRA’s press release, dated December 22, 2006, they are proposing to hold “open houses” rather than a public hearing process. This is contrary to what they told our elected officials last spring they would do. We object to this process and are countering with our own process. We will be holding a Press Conference at Cashman Center (the Las Vegas venue) where DTRA will have its session and are inviting the public to come and let the government know how they feel. We will be video taping these comments and will submit them to the agency. There are plans by coalition members in Reno to hold an informational meeting even though DTRA and NNSA/NSO have no plans to be in the northern part of the state.

Our neighbors in Utah are planning events when the traveling road show goes to Salt Lake City and St. George. Unfortunately, DTRA are not going to give people in Idaho the opportunity to be heard even though there were counties in Idaho that had far more fallout during the years of testing than any other part of this country.

The lack of respect and concern that our federal agencies are exhibiting compares to the heyday of nuclear testing at the Nevada Test Site, when they assured us it was perfectly safe. It wasn’t and it isn’t!
