Freedom-Seekers, by Paul V. Rafferty

They lived in Spain, in the service of the King. Then, they were sent to the Americas, to accelerate the Conquest – but once they were there, some decided that Freedom was better than service and they broke away, heading North, where they found wide open spaces, where they could live as they chose and they prospered.

Soon, they were assisting others and enabling them to prosper. First the local people, then immigrants like themselves. In time, the lives of everyone they met improved and the Freedom –Seekers who had come from Spain to new worlds and new lives were called “Noble” by everyone, for they enobled all who met them.

Of course, there were conflicts. Change often brings conflict, but if the goal is true, the conflicts will pass.

In time, the Noble Freedom-Seekers enabled the local people and the immigrant people to meet together in places where the Noble Freedom-Seekers would perform simple tricks to amuse local and immigrant, alike – but as they did so, the locals and the immigrants began to forget the Nobility of the Freedom-Seekers – and in so doing, the locals and the immigrants began to lose their own Nobility.

Now, in the land of the Freedom-Seekers, there is little Noblity to be found – except in the Freedom-Seekers.

There are Freedom-Seekers who still roam some of the last great open spaces of the land, in the nation they helped create - but they are in danger. There are people in the nation who do not value Freedom, people who are fearful of the wide open spaces, people who resent the Freedom-Seekers, people who wish that all people were contained in easily controllable areas.

Now, in the land of the Freedom-Seekers, the Noble Freedom-Seekers are being captured by those who say they believe in Freedom, but do not know the meaning of the word, for they believe only in “Security” and “Ownership” - words that mean little to the Freedom-Seekers – and so, those who seek only “Security” and “Ownership” believe they must eliminate the Noble Freedom-Seekers.

The Noble Freedom-Seekers, who helped build the United States, in accordance with their own vision of Freedom, are now seen only as a “commodity” or a “nuisance”. To those who still believe in Freedom, however, they are seen as the embodiment of all that America once stood for, in a world where Freedom is – and always has been – in danger.

Yes, the Noble Freedom-Seekers - better known as “wild horses” – may soon be slaughtered - simply because they are “in the way”.
