The conference formalised a non-binding “pledge”, made five years ago, that governments woud work to cutting the 800 million figure in half, by 2015. This would require releasing more than 30 million people from the bonds of hunger, each year. Last year, 6 million rose above the hunger line.
The Declaration also calls upon the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) to “elaborate, in a period of two years, a set of voluntary guidelines to support Member States’ efforts to achieve the progressive realization of the right to adequate food.”
Five words , “the right to adequate food” are probably the most important part of the Declaration, for this implies recognition of the fact that human beings have a “Right” to eat. The United States finds this offensive, fearing the possibility of legal action, should such basic needs not be realised.
Once again, the United States has placed its own agenda above the concerns of other nations and continues to push the United Nations into GM research , which will benefit large multi-nationals like Monsanto which are intent on controlling world food resources.
