DU NETWORK OF HUDSON MOHAWK REGION TO MEET WITH SENATOR'S REPRESENTATIVES

Local "Depleted" Uranium Network meets with Senators Schumer and Clinton to call attention to DU contamination in the US and abroad

Following the disclosure of the discovery of depleted uranium (DU) contamination in soldiers returning from Iraq (Times Union editorial, 4/7/04, and related story 4/8/04), the "Depleted" Uranium Weapons Network of the Hudson Mohawk Region (DUWNHMR) will join with representatives from over a dozen statewide groups to meet with Senator Charles Schumer's legislative representative, Jean Bordewich, in Kingston on Thurs., April 22. They will also meet with Senator Clinton's legislative aide, Andrew Shapiro, in Washington D.C. Monday, April 26.

DUWNHMR, a network of local organizations concerned about the effects of DU, has been educating the public and connecting the issue of DU contamination from the local level at the former NL site in Colonie to the global level in areas such as Iraq, Afghanistan, and the Balkans.

DUWNHMR will present the first installment of its petition drive calling for the US government to end the development, testing, stockpiling, and wartime use of DU weapons; to finance the cleanup and safe disposal of the environmental con-tamination resulting from DU weapons in Iraq; and to provide free, comprehensive medical care to all US soldiers, veterans, and civilians injured by DU weapons.

The group will ask for:

· introduction of a companion bill in the Senate to the McDermott Bill (HR 1483)for cleanup, medical care, and researching health and environmental effects

· full compliance by the Pentagon with its own regulations concerning prior testing, training, properly equipping, prompt and adequate testing and medical care of troops and affected civilians,

· nonrenewal of US DOT exemption E-9649 from labeling DU shipments in transport as radioactive, which expires June 30, 2004, to alert domestic firefighters in the event of an accident

· health tests and studies of the neighbors, former neighbors, and former workers of the former National Lead Indusries factory in Colonie, NY, where DU contamination was found

· an investigation into the violation of the 1949 Geneva Convention by global use of DU weapons, which harm civilians after conflict has ended. DU munitions are classified under a United Nations resolution as illegal weapons of mass destruction, whose use breaches all international laws, treaties and conventions forbidding poisoned weapons calculated to cause unnecessary suffering.

Other groups planning to attend include: Veterans for Peace, Vietnam Vets Against War, Cancer Awareness Coalition, Rockland Coalition for Peace and Justice, Syracuse Peace Council, Caribbean Latin American Support Project, SAFE Legacy, Orange County Peace and Justice Coalition, the Sierra Club, 9/11 People Against Racism, Peace and Justice Committee of the New Paltz Religious Society of Friends (Quakers), and Women in Black, of Woodstock.

HAS "DEPLETED" URANIUM TURNED IRAQI CITIES INTO A RADIOACTIVE DANGER AREA FOR BOTH OCCUPATION TROOPS AND IRAQIS?
In downtown Baghdad, reporters have measured radiation levels that are 1,000 to 1,900 times higher than normal background radiation levels.
