Anti-war Movement to Bush Administration: End the Occupation of Iraq
March 20 protests slated for cities around U.S. and internationally
Actions to mark one-year anniversary of Iraq War
New York, NY--Marking one year since the U.S.-led bombing of Iraq began, anti-war groups throughout the United States and around the globe will take to the streets on Saturday, March 20, under the banner "The World Still Says No to War." Over 150 protests are planned in cities across the U.S., from Alaska to Florida, Hawaii to Maine, calling for an end to the occupation of Iraq. Similar demonstrations will take place on continents around the world, making March 20 a global day of coordinated action in the spirit of last year's historic February 15 protests. An up-to-date list of U.S. and international actions is available on the web at: http://www.unitedforpeace.org
The March 20 protests come after months of revelations vindicating the anti-war movement's position that waging war on Iraq was unnecessary and unjustified. Mounting evidence indicates that Iraq posed no imminent threat to the United States and that Bush administration justifications for its preemptive strike were deliberately exaggerated or false. The March 20 protests will highlight the ongoing costs of war and occupation: 550 U.S. soldiers have been killed and more than 3,000 injured; over 10,000 Iraqi civilians have died. The cost already exceeds $100 billion with no end in sight.
Military families and veterans will play a prominent role in the March 20 protests, including one near Ft. Bragg in North Carolina. Over 400 groups have endorsed March 20 including labor unions, religious organizations, student and veterans groups.
Notable protests include:
New York City: Tens of thousands from throughout the Northeast will converge in Midtown Manhattan for a march and rally in the heart of the city's busiest shopping district.
Fayetteville, North Carolina: A march and rally will bring an anti-war message to the U.S. military base at Ft. Bragg. Organizers expect the event, which will draw people from throughout the Southeast, to be the largest there since the Vietnam War.
Crawford, Texas: Activist caravans from around Texas will converge on President George W. Bush's hometown for a parade and rally.
United for Peace and Justice (UFPJ) is a national coalition with more than 700 groups under its umbrella. Since its founding in October 2002, UFPJ has spurred hundreds of protests and rallies around the country, including the two largest demonstrations against the Iraq war.

News from the Impeach Bush Movement
Saturday March 20 Demonstrations to Mark the One Year Anniversary of the Criminal War and Occupation of Iraq
FROM: VoteToImpeach/ImpeachBush.org
Today marks the one year anniversary of George W. Bush's criminal and illegal bombing and attack on the people of Iraq. One year since he began formally sacrificing the lives of young men and women to carry out his illegal campaign of conquest in the Middle East, ending the lives of more than 550 servicepeople and causing 9,000 more to be sent back to the U.S. with life-altering wounds, missing limbs, psychological breakdowns and illness. One year in which tens of thousands of Iraqis have been killed, families destroyed; water, electricity, access to work and healthcare gone. It's been more than one year of lies from the Bush Administration, and the past year has laid bare those lies.
When tens of thousands of people take to the streets Saturday, March 20, in demonstrations around the U.S. and the world, they will demand that the Bush Administration be held accountable for its crimes against humanity, its violations of international and U.S. law, and for its lies before the people and Congress. The one appropriate Constitutional mechanism to hold high officials accountable for high crimes is impeachment. A slap on the wrist is not enough. Anything less than impeachment allows the criminals to walk free with impunity, and fails to send a deterrent message to those who aspire to leadership, including the presidency.
ImpeachBush.org/VoteToImpeach members are getting on buses or organizing car caravans to come to the mass demonstrations in New York City, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Chicago tomorrow, Saturday March 20. Impeach Bush signs, banners, placards, bumper stickers, buttons and t-shirts will be seen all over the country as people go into the streets. There will be demonstrations in more than 250 cities and towns.
One year ago, we condemned the Bush administration's planned unilateral war. Not only was the planned aggression a violation of law, we insisted that it would lead to the deaths of tens of thousands of innocent people both in Iraq and among U.S. GI's. The death toll each week continues to mount as a grim reminder of that reality. The callousness of the Bush leadership grouping is breathtaking. They don't give a dime about the human beings whose lives have been extinguished
General Tommy Franks, who was chief of central command in Iraq prior to his retirement last year, stated at a Chamber of Commerce event in Kansas recently that he believed the deaths of U.S. service men and women in Iraq so far were "absolutely not" too high a price to pay. He added, "If it costs 500 [lives] that's OK, or 5,000, OK, or 50,000 that's OK with me." (Salina Journal January 29, 2004) This is the same General, who, when asked about the number of Iraqi people killed by the U.S. war, stated, "We don't do body counts."
This past year has been important for VoteToImpeach/ImpeachBush.org members who have demanded true accountability and raised the impeachment issue into what is now a real possibility, widely discussed in the media and in the halls of Congress. The pressure is building and it is your work that is now posing a serious threat to the political future of Bush and his gang of warmongers and corporate profiteers.
The March 20 demonstrations will push the call for Impeachment into the mass media, onto television screens and in newspaper articles across the U.S.and around the world. Join the impeachment contingents, wear your t-shirts, make your own signs or pick up one of the signs that we'll have available - we hope to see you on March 20. We need your help to make these actions a powerful success and to support the impeachment campaign. If you have contributed before, we ask that you please consider doing so again, and if you have never contributed, now is the time. You can make a donation online through out secure server by clicking here, where you can also get information to write a check. http://www.votetoimpeach.org/donate.htm
Help spread the word - pick up your ImpeachBush t-shirts, bumper stickers, lawn signs at the VoteToImpeach/ImpeachBush.org Resource Center, by clicking here, http://votetoimpeach.org/store/ And now we have new palm size ImpeachBush.org mini-stickers - 4 inches long, one inch high - 25 to a pack which you can carry with you anywhere and stick up everywhere. These sold out within hours of our first announcement, but we've made more!
