TREES NOT WALLS! TOMORROW IN QATANNA
Villagers, Internationals and residents of Mevasseret Zion will gather to plant olive trees and protest against the Apartheid Wall
[Qatanna, Northwest Jerusalem] On Friday, March 05, 2004, at 1am, the villagers from the Biddu/Beit Surik area will gather to pray and replant olive trees in Qatanna, near Mevasseret Zion settlement. They will be joined by Israeli peace activists from Rabbis for Human Rights, Internationals and by residents of Mevasseret Zion for a nonviolent protest on the planned route of the Apartheid Wall which will take 51,650 dunams from eight villages in the area.
This demonstration will take place two days after the funeral in Biddu of 20 year-old Mohamed Saleh Bedwan who died several days after being shot a rubber-coated metal bullet in the Israeli Army.
Bulldozers have stopped destroying surrounding farmlands in this region since last Sunday after the Israeli Supreme Court issued an order to cease work for seven days. Another hearing is scheduled on Sunday, March 7, 2004.
DEIR QADDIS VILLAGERS PROTEST THE DESTRUCTION OF THEIR COMMUNITY
Deir Qaddis locals will attempt to stop the bulldozers tomorrow from destroying their farmlands
[Deir Qaddis, RAMALLAH] Tomorrow, Friday, March 05, 2004, the villagers of Budrus along with Internationals from the ISM will join Deir Qaddis' locals in their attempt to stop the work of the Israeli Army bulldozers in their village, in the northeastern region of Ramallah, near Budrus, where they already intended to start working this morning before being stopped by the villagers. Tomorrow, Deir Qaddis' villagers will attempt to stop the bulldozers again, using nonviolent direct action.
Deir Qaddis is located in a cluster along with 8 other villages which will be totally surrounded by the Apartheid Wall once the third phase of the construction of the Wall will be achieved. The village will ultimately turn out to be a prison for its population, making the access to health, education and work nearly impossible.
After the tragic conclusion of last week demonstrations in Beit Surik, the community leaders of Deir Qaddis called for an international presence during the demonstration and asked for Budrus' residents to support their struggle for the preservation of their community.

Words Have Failed Us (Ha'aretz) Amira Hass on Ignorance of the Reality of Occupation
[Amira Haas, a long time respected reporter for Ha'aretz, repeats this information in the article below not so much to remind us of the statistics but to point out something that is, perhaps, more fundamental. As she puts it, "The written word is a failure at making tangible to Israeli readers the true horror of the occupation in the Gaza Strip." Needless to say, the same is true for American readers as well.
The logic is simple and inescapable and Haas does not mince words: "the proximity of every expansive settlement to the densely populated, suffocating crowded Palestinian community is what causes the large number of Palestinian casualties in the Gaza Strip, including many civilians." "The IDF operates within the logic of those arrogant, cynical, and ruthless settlements of a privileged fat few sitting in the midst of the only land reserves that the Palestinians have in the Gaza Strip." In a very literal sense, every settler in the Gaza Strip, man woman and child, has blood on their hands. -- AK]
