The Wages of Fear, by Edmond Dalpe

Is this wave of violence from 9-11 to the current war on terror in Baghdad really about "Evil Doers", or it is about oil? What if it is instead something more Machiavellian, something which has occurred between the rulers of nations since the dawn of civilization: a grab for control, and dominance over the world's global resources, "The Grand Chess Board" if you will?

The following analyses by Thierry Meyssan suggest that "Old Europe" and the US might be the leading protagonist behind this contest: Chronicles of the Empire - No. VI; Monetary War Has Been Declared Against the United States.

Meyssan writes:
“The United States has never before appeared as powerful and as fragile as at the present moment. ... the U.S. is fragile because this military strength is not supported by its economy, but by its currency. ... the survival of the U.S. is menaced - not by an external enemy, but by internal economic weakness and tensions running between its communities. ... Jacques Chirac and Gerhard Schroder have engaged France and Germany in a pitiless war against the United States. They have sent emissaries world wide to convince other States to convert their monetary reserves to euros. The first to accept were Iran, Iraq and North Korea. Precisely the countries described by George W. Bush as those of the "axis of evil".

For you to even consider what I am suggesting I would first have to show that the international dollar has been unstable for the last several years; as it has. Do you remember as soon as the Bush administration stole the election (thanks to Diebold http://www.dalpe.net/dread-docs/polotics2/voting.html ) the Internet businesses experienced a meltdown as a result of a single phrase from the Federal Reserve's Chairman Sir Alan Greenspan; "irrational exuberance"? This was followed by Greenspan cutting interest rates 10 time during 2001. Topped off with G.W.'s pouring our national treasury into the pockets of the richest in a "Tinkle Down" economic stimulus package. “Irrational Exuberance” was the reason given that businesses failed. To me this explanation just sounds irrational. The meltdown occurred as a result of a deliberate policy reversal to shift the money away from the private sector toward revitalizing the war economy of the last 50 years. Technically, Greenspan lied by omission, what he should have said is that he believed that the United States’ ability to move its war economy to the private sector was “irrational exuberance”. Former US Secretary of Labor Robert Reich wrote the following in an article titled, “The global economy is teetering”:

“... That's just the United States. The rest of the world is as bad or worse. Germany, the largest economy in Europe, is in a slump, dragging the rest of Europe down with it. The Japanese economy is nearly comatose. Argentina, until recently South America's powerhouse, is in deep recession and about to default on its international loans. The former "tigers" of Southeast Asia - Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong and Taiwan - are basket cases. The global economy is teetering.” (REICH, November 2001)

I go back to my original question, do you think this wave of violence from 9-11 to Baghdad is a struggle between good and evil, oil, or a reaction to a challenge to the American elite's geo-economic sphere of influence and ultimately its power? From a GNN article titled, Capitalist Junkies Shock and Awe, Naomie Klein gave the following reasons for the war in Iraq:( http://www.guerrillanews.com/bunker/west/doc3366.html )

“... I believe that the goal of this war was to bomb, into being, a new free trade zone. ... Capitalism functions like a drug addict. The drug is growth. It needs growth to survive. ... its usual dealers, are cutting it off. That's what is happening in Latin America. When attempts to privatize energy and water in Bolivia are resisted, when huge popular movements are saying 'we don't want the free trade area of the Americas'... in Cancun, the last WTO round, when poor countries banded together and said 'we'd rather have no deal than a bad deal.' ... then you have to say: 'OK, if that's the goal, (of the war) how's it going?' It's going great. It's not a mess. It's not a morass. It's not a quagmire. In fact, it's going so well that the Economist recently describe Iraq as a ‘capitalist dream.’ ...”

So I ask the question again, do you think this wave of violence from 9-11 to Baghdad is a struggle between good and evil, oil, or a reaction to a challenge to the American elite's geo-economic sphere of influence and ultimately its power? To find the answer to seemingly unanswerable questions, I ask the most fundamental question about the nature of the thing at hand: What is the nature of war? The nature of war in general is not to win or gain anything it is simply to destroy and destabilize. Gains are only achieved from a necessary and inevitable rebuilding process, which follows the destructive effects of war. And according to The Economist Iraq is a "capitalist dream". American tycoons are now assured of Iraqi dependence on the US dollar for some time. And they are allowed to reap 100% of the profit form any venture. As an added bonus the US citizens will assume all of the risk (financial and security) of any capital venture! Wow! We pay the bills and bleed, while they drink mint juleps on the veranda! This is the mother of all capitalist dreams! This is not capitalism, it is Corporatism as Benito Mussolini so eloquently pointed our: "Fascism should rightly be called corporatism as it is a merger of state and corporate power."

So the question becomes How are we fooled? How are we compelled down the road to war? How do we begin to destroy? We fear. Where did our fear come from? This brings us back to the beginning, 911. Whom ever attacked the U.S. on September 11, 2001 wanted an irrational reaction from us, to further destabilize a world in the midst of an economic crisis. Because destabilization means war and war is a "corporate wet dream". Obviously, they did not fear the U.S. military, so now the question becomes which business interest will profit, and are not afraid of the US military? The answer is no country would commit such an overt act of aggression on the United States. Therefore, the answer must come from within.

To quote Abraham Lincoln:
“... All the armies of Europe, Asia, and Africa combined, with all the treasure of the earth in their military chests; with a Buonaparte for a commander, could not by force take a drink from the Ohio, or make a track on the Blue Ridge, in the trial of a thousand years. ... At what point then is the approach of danger to be expected? I answer, if it ever reach us, it must spring up amongst us. It cannot come from abroad. If destruction be our lot, we ourselves must be its author and finisher. ... “(Abraham Lincoln, January 27, 1838)

The individuals who rule any nation know that stirring ancient fears and allowing acts of horrific violence to occur to the people of the "Homeland", "Motherland", or "Fatherland" is the most expedient process that will galvanize a society overnight. When dangers arise, characteristically humans will pledge their loyalty to who ever will be a guarantor of their safety regardless of the cost to their liberties and however distasteful the guarantor's methods are. The following is what Herman Goering had to say on the topic of starting a war:

“... Naturally the common people don't want war: neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But after all, it is the leaders of a country who determine the policy, and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to do the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country.” (Herman Goering)

In old European culture, there was a similar myth of an "Evil Doer" that spread fear threw out the heart of the land. "So lived the clansmen in cheer and revel a winsome life, till one began to fashion evils, that field of hell." The "Evil Doer" was called Grendel. This murderous son of Moorland was told in the story of Beowulf.( http://www.dalpe.net/dread-docs/literature/BeowulfOLD.txt )

Rumors of violence spread through the land, "Grendel", "Osama", "The Evil Doer", they are the necessary precursors to transform a human into an animal. A call to arms and greatness grew Hrothgar's numbers of obedient comrades to be rigorously yoked by Hrothgar's kind. To me, Beowulf reads more like an instruction manual on how to organize humans into warlike fiefdoms. It really doesn't matter what form of government you live by; socialistic, democratic, fascistic, capitalistic, or even communistic: because when that field of hell is fashioned and Pandora's box opened, we all march backward to that glorious dark age when we allowed despots to sit on the throne of power.

Of course Nero "fiddled" while Rome burned just as Hitler allowed the Reichstag to be burned to the ground. The same way, Roosevelt knew about Pearl Harbor and did nothing. I have no doubt that the Gulf of Tonkin was untrue, just as sure as I know that the current administration had foreknowledge of 9-11 to say the least. ( http://www.mindfully.org/Reform/2002/How-To-Start-A-WarMay02.htm )

The Old World Order's process of colonialization is obsolete because big business has run out of lands and people to exploit. Therefore the New and Improved paradigm is to, "bomb before you buy" (Klein, 2003). It is a continuation of the old colonialist system with a twist; it is similar to destroying the perfectible good strip mall down the street to make way for the new and improved one under the guise of progress. Nothing has changed; same old system. There is little difference between the colonial process that replaced the Native American cultures with a “new and improved” European one, or the "bomb before you buy" (Klein, 2003) polices of the New World Order: Kosovo, Serbia, Yugoslavia, Afghanistan, Iraq, etc. Call it what you will but what type of world do you want to live in, one where wrong is spun right, and human life is blown away by a storm of expedience profits?

Conclusion and Brief Bio:

I has studied art and design at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, and attended two years at Goddard College in Vermont studying the creative process. So, you ask yourself, “Why is an artist writing about politics?” Because I feel it is necessary for each of us to speak out when tyrants seize the high offices of responsibility in government, media, and business. Our servants have become our masters and are lying, stealing everything in sight, or waging war on anyone who refuses to accept their edicts. The war economy that drove our financial system for the past two decades is dysfunctional; this is the reason for this latest round of violence in the world. The American economy has been unstable since Mikhail Gorbachev declaring peace in 80’s. At the time, Gorbachev remarked to us that he did not believe that the US could maintain it status in the world without an enemy.

Big businesses has hijacked our democracy and installed a puppet regime hell bent on bring back the good old days of the cold war. This administration has decided to manufacture the ultimate adversary, one that will never be defeated, that will never die, never surrender, and never ever again declare peace as the Soviets have done. This is the military industrial complex’s dream enemy; TERRORISM.

My answer to the question, why is an artist writing about politics is simple, what we need now more than ever are individuals that can think outside of the box. There are many things we can all do individually, however, the following is a list of policies that I recommend we do on a national and international level. It is comprised of common interests that move beyond the divisive politics of right-left, abortion and other issues designed to keep us apart:

· Dissolve the Federal Reserve System. (JFK’s proposal)
· Restructure the CIA, ONI, and FBI. (JFK’s proposal)
· Apologize to all nations we broke treaties with or committed overt act of aggression on.
· Repeal the Patriot Act.
· Use NASA and the US military’s high-technology for the private sector and social services like the Internet, and Infrastructure, healthcare, etc..
· Invest in the Peace Corps. (JFK’s proposal)
· Honor our airmen (and women), soldiers, sailors, and marines by not spilling their blood needlessly.
· Use the military corps of engineers and reinstate the WPA to rebuild our ports, highways, and bridges.
· Overturn the Taft-Hartley Act.
· Withdraw from the WTO and NAFTA.
· Cooperate with nations in this hemisphere not exploit them.
· Reverse the privatization policy of vital cultural systems like health care, transportation, water, power, communications, and food supplies.
· Invest in alternative fuels and develop solar power.
· Adhere to the Cafe standards and Clean Water Act
· Enact laws that make it profitable to be environmentally responsible.
· Make a good education a constitutional right and invest in the public educational system.
· Return to a more equitable tax system.
· Open the cultural commons (media) to alternative viewpoints.
· Remove the negative stigma associated with poverty and reinvest in the nation’s poor by changing the welfare system.
· Enforce severe penalties for white-collar crimes.
· Take the profit from the penal system and reinstate the rehabilitation principals.
· Ban actors and business tycoons from politics.
· Enforce the general welfare principle of the constitution.
