OCCUPIED JERUSALEM - The Israeli occupation army imposed further restrictions on Palestinian population centers Sunday, sealing a refugee camp and banning inter-city travel in much of the West Bank.
Eyewitnesses said troops backed by tanks and armored personnel carriers clamped a tight siege on the Balata refugee camp outside Nablus, the largest city in the West Bank.
"They (Israeli troops) are preventing people from entering or leaving the camp," said Hasan Nufal, a citizen of the camp. "We are now living in a large prison."
Earlier, Israeli tanks and armored vehicles rampaged through the streets of Nablus amid heavy gunfire, reports say.
The Israeli army said five of its soldiers were injured when a roadside explosive charge was detonated via remote control.
The Al-Quds regiments, the armed wing of the Islamic Jihad resistance group, declared responsibility for the attack.
A leaflet circulated by the group said the blast killed one Israeli soldier and injured four others.
In the southern West Bank, the occupation army closed down a key intersection in western Hebron, barring thousands of Palestinians, including as many as 300 school teachers, from reaching their destination.
On Saturday, soldiers manning a roadblock near Nablus shot and killed an unarmed Palestinian motorcyclist as he was returning home.
Eyewitnesses described the killing as a "cold-blooded murder of an innocent man."
A few months ago, a report published by the Israeli newspaper Ha’aretz pointed out that up to 80% of the Palestinian victims of the Israeli army are innocent people who had nothing to do with the resistance activities.
