TV Turnoff Week is Here ! April 23 - 27

Article image TV Turnoff Week is upon us and the main organising group, Adbusters, is having trouble getting television companies to show their commercials.
No surprise, since television is basically a means to lure people into becoming
“consumers”. The content is less important than the packaging, since that’s what brings in the money.

More frightening, however, are the new developments for “interactive” TV, which is essentially a means to spy on the viewer, so that advertisers can more effectively promote their products.

It also opens the door to the “interactivity” of George Orwell’s “1984”.
This should also come as no surprise, since CASPIAN, a
“consumer” watchdog group, has been documenting the rapid erosion of privacy, stemming from the corporate methods of gathering information on “consumer” purchasing habits, from food, to medecine, to clothing, to whatever. Soon a micro-chip in currency may be able to tell governments and corporations exactly who spent what where.
