American vs. European Journalists, by Sulaiman Al-Akeeli, Al-Watan

These days we see journalists from all over the world flocking to the Kingdom in search of news. Their numbers are steadily increasing, as if these journalists had suddenly discovered a new territory holding a treasure of news and information.
The Kingdom has long opened its doors for foreign journalists seeking the truth. It is only after the Sept. 11 attacks — where it was reported that 15 of the alleged hijackers who carried out the attacks against New York and Washington were Saudis — that we began to witness this flood of media people. The Kingdom has now become a focal point for journalists from all over the world who previously failed to realize the significance of the country.

Foreign journalists keep landing in our country with different motives and goals.
Some want to know more about the Kingdom’s youth in an attempt to decipher the secrets of these young men, who in their eyes could be potential terrorists. Others want to know about the anticipated administrative and political reforms. Still others run after stories concerning human rights and freedom of the press. It is as if our country had suddenly turned out to be the most important place on earth. The credit goes to the size of news coverage given to the Kingdom by the American media.
