ARMENIA: PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS: THE TENSION MOUNTS

Tensions between the supporters of Stepan Demirchyan and the Armenian President, Robert Kocharian, escalated on Thursday 26 February as Interior Ministry and Military forces blocked Yerevan's Baghramian Avenue with razor wire.

Opposition claims that the 19 February Presidential Elections were conducted improperly are backed up by international observers who declared that the elections failed to meet international standards.

Since the elections, police have arrested dozens of opposition activists and the situation in Armenia is considered more volatile with each passing day before the second round of the elections to be held on 5 March 2003.
