Ubon Ratchathani, Thailand, (ITTO/IUCN) - At a time of growing international tension, the International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO) and IUCN - The World Conservation Union are convening a major international gathering designed to encourage greater cross-border cooperation in tropical forest conservation. Park managers and policy-makers from more than 30 countries will attend the workshop, which starts in Ubon Ratchathani, Thailand today.
Species and ecosystems are not bound by political or administrative borders. To conserve species and maintain ecosystem processes that support our social and economic systems, we need conservation programmes that transcend political boundaries.

Responding to this need, there has been phenomenal growth and interest in Transboundary Conservation Areas (TBCAs) throughout the world. From 59 such areas in 1988, the number of TBCAs has more than doubled and will nearly triple by the end of 2003. The International Tropical Timber Organization's transboundary conservation areas, for example, now cover some 10 million hectares in nine tropical countries.
