Mexico: Bloody Battle for Baja Drug Trade Ahead

Article image
25 March 2002 Summary

With the Tijuana drug cartel's top two leaders out of the picture, turf wars will erupt between other large regional drug trafficking organizations that want to gain control of the profitable Baja California drug franchise.
An organization run by Ismael Zambada will likely be the victor. Whoever comes out on top, drug shipments to the United States should not suffer much, if any, disruption.

Analysis

Three unidentified people were found dead, their bodies bound with electrical tape, in different parts of Tijuana on March 20. Though the deaths have not been directly connected, they bear the markings of drug-related killings and could be a sign of an expanding battle for control of the lucrative Baja California drug franchise.
