Philip Berrigan, Anti-War Activist, Dies at Home in Baltimore, Maryland, United States

The first Catholic priest in U.S. history to be imprisoned for a political crime, author of several books and founder of the Plowshare Movement, an international effort to resist militarism, Father Berrigan was released from prison, last December and has now died from cancer.

"I die with the conviction, held since 1968 and Catonsville, that nuclear weapons are the scourge of the earth; to mine for them, manufacture them, deploy them, use them, is a curse against God, the human family, and the earth itself."
