A Presidential Election has just occurred in the United States – with paper ballots. Therefore, there is little uncertainty as to the outcome. Joe Shirley, Jr. was elected President of the Navajo (Dineh) Nation, along with his running-mate Vice-President-elect Frank Dayish Jr.
President-Elect Shirley faces difficult decisions in the months ahead due to an ongoing legal battle over water-rights, in this near “Sahelian” climate, where water is a scarce resource.
Tom Aviso, Jr. Editor of The Navajo Times told the U.N. OBSERVER & International Report that the newly elected President will continue with the law suit against Peabody Coal, a British mining corporation that seeks to divert local waters for its exclusive use, thereby threatening the very existence of the Navajo (Dineh) and Hopi Nations.

Water rights have also become a contentious issue between the two Native American Nations which share territory in the Southwestern United States.
