Modern Industrial Agriculture - A Program for Reform

First BSE, and now foot-and-mouth, have led to calls in Europe for a thorough review of industrial animal farming, which is increasingly seen as cruel and unhealthy.

Compassion in World Farming (CIWF) has put forward an Action Plan for reform which we
believe needs to be adopted in order to introduce farming methods which are healthier and more humane:

1. Industrial farming methods – which are particularly prevalent in the pig and poultry industries – should be ended.
2. Industrial agriculture is characterised by practices which impose serious health problems or pain on animals and/or prevent them from carrying out their natural behaviour.

The vast majority of egg-laying hens in the European Union (EU) and the US are kept in battery cages. Usually five or more are crammed into a cage so tiny that they cannot even spread their wings. Nor can they peck and scratch at the ground, build a nest, dust-bathe or perch, all of which have been established by veterinary science as important behaviours for hens.
