The Root of All Evil ?

Contrary to popular belief, it seems that people really do care about how their money is used. The results of an NOP poll released today show that UK consumers think their savings should benefit society as well as themselves.

The survey is proof that money can be used to make a positive difference claim leading ethical bank, Triodos Bank . Triodos has commissioned the poll as part of a campaign challenging UK consumers to ‘Take Control’ of their finances and use them positively.

Almost two-thirds (64%) of the survey thought their savings should benefit society as well as pay interest. And, according to the poll, UK consumers are unhappy with a lack of transparency from their banks: More than four out of five people (81%) polled wanted to hear the straight facts about how their bank invest their money, rather than hear policy statements. Not only that, over 60% thought their banks were actively unwilling to provide information about the companies they invest in.

“If you have a savings account, then right now, someone else is using your money,” says Matthijs Bierman, Deputy Managing Director at Triodos Bank. “The bank decides who it does business with and most don’t tell you what they are investing in. We think this is wrong. It is alarming that we are the only bank in the country to publish details of every loan we make so our customers know exactly how we’re using their money. This sort of transparency should be the norm, not the exception. Consumers have the power to change this situation and make a positive difference to the world around them simply through the way they save and spend their money.”
