Washington The United States has rejected a request by Swiss Senator Dick Marty to visit Guantánamo prison.
A spokesman for the Council of Europe said that "the United States sent a very short message saying they couldn't accept his request to visit and talk to inmates."
Senator Marty and Mr. Manfred Nowak, the U.N. Special Rapporteur for Torture planned to travel to Guantánamo to question detainees about reports that they were, before being transferred to Guantánamo, held in secret prisons in Europe.
In a report published by Dick Marty in June 2006 (*), the report pointed at twenty European countries that colluded in a web of secret CIA jails and flight transfers of terrorism suspects that were stretching from Asia to Guantánamo.

The report also said that European governments have violated Human Rights treaties by helping the United States carry out "extraordinary rendition" flights, which is the American practice of transporting detainees to other Nation-States for interrogation.
In the detention centers, suspects could face torture, or extraordinary renditions which all would breach European Human Rights Conventions.
