Israel Rafalovich: E.U. Aid to Indonesian Flood Victims + UPDATES

The European Commission has decided grant 600,000 Euros in emergency aid to victims of floods in Jakarta, Indonesia.

These floods appear to be the worst since 2002, in a city that together with its suburbs has about fourteen million people.

The torrential rains, since the end of January, have caused massive flooding in Jakarta and its surrounding area, covering about seventy percent of the city.

According to estimates, between 191,400 to 340,000 people have been made homeless and according to latest information, 56 have been killed.

Rains are foreseen to remain at the same level for the next few weeks and could worsen the situation.

The most urgent needs outlined are food supplies and clean water, as well as clothing, blankets, emergency latrines and water purification plants.

There is the danger of epidemic disease outbreaks, including dysentery, diarrhea, dengue or cholera, because of the consumption and usage of contaminated water.
