Activities in New Mexico to Test Returning Vets for DU

A message from DUST

Dear Folks,

Many of our veterans are returning from war zones with debilitating symptoms of unknown origins. We of DUST (the Committee for Depleted Uranium Sensitive Testing) are progressing in our efforts to get a bill passed in the New Mexico legislature that provides members of the New Mexico National Guard returning from Iraq and other wars with voluntary sensitive testing for uranium contamination. For this bill to become law we need your help and your financial support.

At the beginning of the legislative session in mid-January Senator Gerald Ortiz y Pino will introduce the bill in the Senate. When it passes the Senate, Representative Peter Wirth will carry it in the House of Representatives with Representative Roberto Gonzales as co-sponsor. Please urge your own Senators and Representatives to co-sponsor this bill.

During the legislative session we hope to bring in witnesses, such as Herbert Reed of South Carolina, a member of the NY National Guard who tested positive for uranium poisoning, and Melissa Sterry, another veteran sick from uranium poisoning who spearheaded Connecticut’s passing of the first state uranium testing law. To bring these National Guard veterans here, we will need to pay their airfare and room and board.

When this bill becomes law, it will be precedent-setting. It will actually appropriate funds, as no other state has done, for the independent and impartial tests that are usually denied our veterans by the federal government. Since the bill also provides for a health registry that will track the health history of veterans, it will help determine any connections between exposure to uranium munitions and veterans’ deteriorating health.

This is how you can help. We need your donations and we need your voice in contacting your own legislators and key committee members at crucial moments during this effort. We also need people who are willing to come to the Capitol building in Santa Fe to ask for legislative support. If you are interested in speaking to legislators, phone-banking, mailings, etc. please e-mail marigayl@netzero.net. Watch for upcoming workshops and updates on the bill. Please make checks payable to Peace Action New Mexico, earmarked for the DU bill project and send to: Peace Action New Mexico, 226 Fiesta St., Santa Fe, NM 87501. Please be as generous as you can. New Mexico can step to the vanguard as the first of all states to pass a DU testing bill that pays more than lip service to the health of our veterans. Join us in this important endeavor!

Sincerely,
Damacio Lopez on behalf of DUST
