In recognition of this past Veterans' Day weekend, EPIC is honored to release a Ground Truth Interview with a veteran who is helping to advance peace and development in Iraq by creating more opportunities for Iraq's youth. Please click photo for clarity.
From May 2003 to July 2004, Captain Jonathan Powers served in Baghdad and Najaf with the U.S. Army's 1st Armored Division. He and his platoon patrolled streets, maintained checkpoints, and took part in ad hoc development projects such as rebuilding schools and assisting orphanages. As a witness to the war's devastating impact on children, Jon became a passionate advocate for the country's youth. Today he directs War Kids Relief, a program of Veterans for America that assists Iraqi youth by funding orphanages and youth centers to help keep kids off the streets and out of militias and insurgent groups. The program works through Iraq's Ministry of Youth and Sports and is fully operated by Iraqi nationals.
