Protesters hold up banners during a demonstration against Bush's visit to Vienna. (Reuters) VIENNA — Washington's so-called war on terror and human rights violations are expected to overshadow US President George W. Bush's summit talks with his European allies in Vienna on Wednesday, June 21.
"We are committed to the fight against terrorism," President of the European Commission, Jose Manuel Barroso, told the International Herald Tribune ahead of the summit.
"But if we suppress civil rights and civil liberties because we are fighting terrorists, that would be a victory for the terrorists," he averred.
In another interview with the Financial Times Deutschland he warned that the West was risking to "lose its soul" if civil liberties were curbed in the war on terrorism
