Jonah House, a courageous pro-active American Peace organisation is conducting a retreat in Washington, D.C. Those who are interested in attending should contact Jonah House, directly. http://www.jonahhouse.org
In the interests of Sanity, we hope our readers will consider the retreat topics for each day – whatever one’s religious beliefs – or non-belief – may be.
Faith and Resistance Retreat
The way of the cross; the way of nonviolence
The overall theme of the retreat is the betrayal, arrest, trial, torture and execution of Jesus and his response of total nonviolence. As Jesus was being arrested, Peter - in an effort to defend him - cut off the ear of the slave of the chief priest. If there ever were a time when violence would seem justified, it would be this moment, when the incarnate God was arrested. Yet Jesus told the disciples: "Put away your sword!" And today, with all our nuclear swords, swords of depleted uranium, swords at the life-line of the poor, Jesus tells us to put away the sword.
Each day, we will reflect on these questions:
WEDNESDAY - April 12 - Who is being betrayed today?
Jesus was betrayed by his disciples. Some gave him up to the soldiers; some left his side, ran away, and denied ever knowing him. Today we remember those who sit in prisons, in detention camps, in interrogation centers - betrayed, virtually forgotten, isolated. We remember those so caught up in what passes for news today, in patriotism and in the commodification culture that they cannot remember who they are and what they have been created to be.
THURSDAY - April 13 - Who is being arrested today?
Jesus was arrested, tried, and tortured - his fate a foregone conclusion. Today we remember those who are being tortured by our government, our military, and our CIA - all done in our name. We reflect that because of endemic silence, their fates, too, will be a foregone conclusion.
FRIDAY - April 14 - Who is being tortured and/or executed today?
Jesus gave a loud cry and gave up his spirit. Today we cry our loudly against the crimes of:
US research, building and use of nuclear weapons
endless and ever widening war
lies used to justify the state of war
Guantanamo, Abu Ghraib, Bagram and countless secret prisons
2 million prisoners in the US.
SATURDAY - April 15 - Whose deaths must we mourn today?
The litany would be nearly endless - of those who have been harassed, imprisoned, disappeared, tortured, raped, or killed in our wars, on our streets, in our homes...
