Brasilia, Brazil: Trade talks between the European Union and Mercosul have been suspended, Europe´s chief negotiator, Karl Falkenberg confirmed Thursday in Brasilia. “The Brasilia round ended without any concrete results”, Falkenberg said.
Mercosul wanted all offers to be agreed upon at once before signing the accord, but the EU defended a position of free trade on a case by case basis.

The goal was to create the world´s largest free trade zone ahead of the US proposed Free Trade Area of the Americas, tentatively scheduled for 2006.
The trade impasse between the two trade blocs is a likely sign that the FTAA will not be agreed upon by all parties by the stated deadline, two years from now.
