The 1600 year-old Greek Orthodox Church of Saint Barbara, in Aboud, Palestine, was “accidentally” destroyed, by Israeli Defence Forces. Soldiers in the IDF have apologised for the “accident”, adding that they were unaware that the destroyed building was a church. Although no on-site analysis is yet available, photos of the destruction would indicate that only a fairly large explosive device would have been capable of such destruction.
Aboud is an ancient village, near Ramallah and between Bethlehem and Jerusalem. It is now surrounded on all sides by illegal Israeli settlements. A new road leads to Aboud, but forks at about three miles from the village and leads on to the settlements.

The “accident” occurred during the continuing Israeli search for potential terrorists, a search
which is quite reminiscent of other failed “Search and Destroy” missions which sought to break the spirit of a people.
The “accident” also follows a pattern, wherein Palestinian villages are repeatedly subjected to harassment and the deprivation of their economic resources.
Aboud was also known for its olive trees. Israel Shamir, a well-known Russian-Israeli writer, wrote of a visit to Aboud, one year ago.
