Veterans Day 2003: Editorial

At the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month in the year 1918, the carnage of the First World War ended and an armistice was signed by the participants. Armistice Day was named in commemoration.

In 1954, in the United States, "Armistice Day" was renamed "Veterans Day", to commemorate the veterans of all wars.

World War I, called the “War to End all Wars”, failed in its objectives but caused the nations of the world to seek a means to prevent future wars, through the League of Nations. This also failed, as the Second World War - a virtual continuation of the First - once more wreaked devastation upon the planet.

The United Nations was formed, in 1945, in the aftermath of the Second World War, in an attempt to prevent future wars, by addressing their underlying reasons.

Although, to date, there has not been a “Third World War” - and the United Nations can claim some responsibility for this fact - there have been many other wars, since the formation of the U.N. - including those now being waged.

In our competitive society, where the major media continues to glorify war and ignore the profits of the arms merchants and war mongers, we will continue to have more casualties, environmental damage and a precarious economy.

Perhaps, it is time we decided to Live in Peace, “to end all wars”.

Where are ‘ troop supporters’ now?: Many of us who protested the Bush Administration’s massive bombing in Afghanistan, and its all-out invasion of Iraq earlier this year, were criticized – and even physically threatened – by some in our community for not “supporting our troops.”

Who really supported troops?: So just who truly supported the troops? Those who sent them to Iraq with no clear plan for bringing them home again or those who warned, don't go there.
