Editorial: A Morality Tale of Nation-States

U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan has cancelled the “Mission to Jenin”, but this is more of a blow to Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon than it is to the Palestinians.

By refusing to allow a thorough investigation of the assault on Jenin, Prime Minister Sharon has placed a permanent shadow over Israel.

If there is nothing to hide, why not allow an investigation ?

The same question has been asked of Iraq’s Saddam Hussein and both leaders have responded in the same manner. Both claim that the proposed investigators are not impartial.

Both claims may or may not be true, but then who will verify the situation on the ground, if no one from outside can investigate ?

The major difference between Iraq and Israel, in this situation, is that Israel has the United States as its “Big Brother” and Iraq has the United States as an avowed enemy.
