In a move that is being widely regarded as an attempt to quell growing criticism of President Bush's previously lax attitude towards the environment, the United States today announced a controversial new programme for tackling global warming within its borders.

The scheme will involve the construction of thousands of "really big fans" along the East Coast that will then blow air westwards across the country.
"The idea of these really big fans is to help reduce the planet's temperature as well as providing a cooling breeze for our citizens," said Secretary of Energy Spencer Abraham at a press conference yesterday. "This will build on the President's existing and highly successful strategy of appeasing the Sun Gods with appropriately timed offerings of goat entrails," he added.
