Viva Victor Jara !

Article image Thirty years ago, today, the architects of the Chilean coup thought they had extinguished a Light.

Victor Jara was tortured and killed on 15 September 1973.
Poet, song writer, singer, muscian, he sang for all who suffer oppression but his voice carried an intrinsic Joy which cried out that there is always Hope.

Those who masterminded the overthrow of Salvador Allende, the democratically elected President of Chile and replaced him with the dictatorial Pinochet regime unleashed a reign of terror that continues to haunt Chile.
Never before had Chile suffered the problems of “caudillismo” where one man rules, as in so much of Latin American History. Now, Chile knows that no one is immune from this fear.

Evil took the life of Victor Jara but his Spirit lives wherever there is Hope for relief from oppression. It also lives in the subconscious of those of us who have heard his songs and in others who have the courage to face the military-industrial complex, armed only with a guitar and the certainty that Light will overcome the darkness.
