MADRID - Spanish police have detained a correspondent for the Arabic language Al-Jazeera television network, alleging that he is linked to Islamic militants. Spanish police say they detained the journalist Tayseer Alouni in the southern Spanish city Granada and transferred him to Madrid for questioning. According to Al Jazeera Net English, Alouni was vacationing with his family at the time of the arrest.
Officials say the detention was tied to a probe of the operations of Islamic militant organizations, including al-Qaida, in Spain. The probe, conducted by Judge Baltasar Garzon, involves the case of Imad Eddin Barakat Yarkas, also known as Abu Dahdah, who is being held in Spain on terrorism charges.

Alouni's wife has denied that her husband had any ties with the groups.
Alouni is a Syrian with Spanish citizenship. Al-Jazeera had sent him to Spain to check into the possibility of assuming the post of the network's correspondent in that country.
Alouni covered the fall of the Taliban in Afghanistan and escaped death by a miracle when U.S. forces bombed al-Jazeera’s offices in Kabul, and again in Baghdad.
